Over the past few years, more and more calls to action have arisen for psychiatrists and mental health professionals to address issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as social justice. Many have answered the call to action by highlighting inequities in mental health care, describing historical and structural determinants that have impacted our field and organizations, and others have chosen to highlight ongoing issues with bias, racial discrimination, and healthcare disparities. This webinar will detail an approach to DEI and social justice that involves creating a framework for sustainable, systemic organizational changes. This framework for organizational change hinges on incorporating all of the current work being done related to DEI and social justice but manages the approach in a systematic way which allows for a re-creation and re-imagination of how organizations can engage with this work in a meaningful and self-sustaining manner.

Anique K. Forrester, MD is a graduate of the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. She completed her Psychiatry residency training as well as Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is board certified in the sub-specialty of Psychosomatic Medicine, renamed Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. She serves as the Dept of Psychiatry Chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and is the Chair of the Dept of Psychiatry Diversity Committee. Dr. Forrester serves as the Director for the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical School of Medicine. She is also the coordinator of the Cultural Psychiatry resident course. As Chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Forrester provides strategic vision and leadership for all of the department’s diversity and inclusion activities and oversees the development and implementation of key goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
