Abstract: Thyroid and mood disorders are both common and may co-occur in the same person, and psychiatrists must optimize treatment for patients with these comorbid disorders. In many cases, thyroid disorder is clear or preexisting. In other cases, thyroid dysfunction is not obvious and is suggested only by marginal abnormalities in thyroid biomarkers or poor response to standard antidepressant treatment. Optimal intervention requires knowledge of thyroid pathology and attention to the possibility of subtle thyroid dysfunction in patients with affective disorders.
