This course is designed to address what psychiatrists in general practice need to know in order to engage effectively with the legal system. Through case presentations, interactive roleplay sessions, and didactics, the participants will learn the core practical skill and knowledge needed to better interact with the courts in these matters. The topics addressed will include Treatment Over Objection, hospital retention, report writing and testifying in court

Format

3 hours of asynchronous video lecture and 1 hour of live instruction.

Live Session: June 5th, 2024 from 6:00-7:00 PM EST.

Attendance during the live session is required to claim credit.

Learning Objectives

• Provide effective testimony in court as a treating psychiatrist and understand subpoenas, depositions, and witness qualifications
• Objective Two: Perform accurate forensic-related assessments that arise in general practice (Treatment Over Objection, hospital retention, AOT/IOC)
• Write effective reports for court submission and improve clinical documentation
• Improve skill in dealing with forensic-related issues that occur in general practice, including “dangerousness” assessments, duty to warn/protect, and ethical issues that arise in practice

How to Earn Credit

After evaluating the program, participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the event date and hours earned.
