Description

The Parasomnias (sleep behavioral and emotional disorders) will be defined and described, and effective therapies will be summarized. These include REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), the dream-enacting parasomnia that can be triggered by most antidepressants (but not bupropion). RBD in patients aged 50 years and older is now known to be the earliest and strongest harbinger of future alpha-synucleinopathies, especially Parkinson's Disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies. The Non-REM sleep parasomnias in adults will also be covered: Sleepwalking, Sleep Terrors, Sexsomnia, and Sleep Related Eating Disorder. Finally, Sleep Related Dissociative Disorder, a psychiatric parasomnia emerging from EEG wakefulness during wake-sleep transitions, or after intervals of N1/N2 sleep (light/intermediate sleep), will be described. Video examples of the parasomnias will be shown.
