Overview

Though the concepts of normal narcissism, pathological traits of vulnerable and grandiose narcissism, and narcissistic personality disorder share the term “narcissism,” they refer to separate entities best understood within different frames of reference. This talk reviews the current understanding of narcissism from the perspective of personality traits, observable personality functioning and personality structures. The varied, seemingly contradictory, clinical presentations of narcissistic pathology are explored, and unifying features identified. An integration of current perspectives provides a conceptual framework for pathological narcissism, informed by an understanding of self-functioning and its disruptions. The multiple forms of narcissism demand careful clinical assessment and differentiated approaches to intervention. The integrated framework described here enables clinicians to understand and address the subjective and objective challenges faced by those with narcissistic disorders and to appreciate the relationship between pathological narcissism and addiction.

After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the event date and hours earned.
