Maternal mental health conditions are leading contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States, where maternal mortality rates remain significantly higher than in other high-income countries. Pregnancy and the postpartum period are associated with new-onset or recurrent psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders. These conditions are further influenced by social determinants of health (SDOH), such as housing instability, food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and socioeconomic disparities, which disproportionately affect mothers of color and underserved populations. Recent changes in reproductive healthcare policy have introduced additional challenges for both patients and clinicians, increasing the complexity of psychiatric care during the perinatal period.
This session will examine the prevalence of perinatal psychiatric disorders, the relationship between maternal mental health and obstetrical outcomes, and the influence of SDOH on maternal morbidity and mortality. Faculty will review the mental health implications of restricted abortion access, barriers to psychiatric care, clinician shortages, and the evolving role of psychiatrists in supporting patients through pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Participants will also learn about emerging models of maternal mental healthcare, including collaborative care embedded within obstetrical practices, statewide perinatal psychiatric consultation programs, educational initiatives, and advocacy efforts designed to improve access to evidence-based care. Practical strategies for integrating these approaches into clinical practice will be discussed to help clinicians address the complex psychiatric needs of pregnant and postpartum patients while promoting equitable, patient-centered care.
