Description 

Active-duty military members often face unique psychiatric and occupational challenges that intersect with access to care, stigma, and system-level barriers. With an increasingly strained military mental health system and rising reliance on civilian providers, there is a growing need for clarity on military accession and retention standards, reporting procedures, and duty-limiting conditions. This activity aims to empower psychiatrists with knowledge of military protocols, improve cultural and policy competence, and guide collaborative approaches that protect service member well-being and mission readiness. Learners will engage with real-world case studies, review Department of Defense (DoD) instructions, and explore APA efforts to standardize education in this area.

Learning Objectives 

1. Differentiate between enlistment/accession standards and retention standards in military settings.
2. Identify mechanisms to track and report civilian care provided to active-duty patients.
3. Locate and utilize resources on military mental health policies, including APA-developed tools.
4. Describe duty-limiting conditions, medications, and treatments that impact military readiness.
5. Determine when and how to refer a patient to a military psychiatrist for duty-specific concerns.

How to Earn Credit 

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may do so after completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the completion date and hours earned. 

Continuing Education Credit  

In support of improving patient care, the American Psychiatric Association is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
