Description
This course introduces "SBIRT”H," a conceptual evolution of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model through the integration of harm reduction strategies. As substance-related mortality continues to rise, particularly overdose deaths, clinicians are seeking more pragmatic, patient-centered approaches. SBIRT”H offers a framework to support individuals in the pre-contemplation phase of behavior change by meeting them where they are and focusing on risk mitigation rather than abstinence alone. Learners will engage with principles of harm reduction, ethical considerations, and real-world implementation challenges through case-based learning and small group discussions. The session emphasizes practical strategies for incorporating harm reduction into SBIRT, thus enhancing clinical impact in diverse settings.

How to Earn Credit
Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may do so after completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the completion date and hours earned.

In support of improving patient care, the American Psychiatric Association is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
