Description 

This session explores the effects of recent political and legal shifts—such as the Dobbs decision and criminalization of gender-affirming care—on the mental health of women and girls. Presenters will examine how coercive experiences including intimate partner violence and disaster survivorship compound harm, and how these challenges present in psychiatric care. The session will also highlight strategies for psychiatrists to support patients and maintain clinician well-being in the face of sociopolitical adversity.

Learning Objectives 

1. Review and update regarding recent legal and policy developments in the United States that can negatively impact the mental health of women and girls.
2. Discuss related patient experiences: forced or coerced pregnancy and childbirth, reproductive coercion in the context of intimate partner violence, forced masculine puberty for trans girls.
3. Discuss patient experiences of coping with natural and human-made disasters without these basic human rights and services.
4. Discuss strategies for improving clinical practice and promoting the mental health of women and girls in the currently challenging political and legal environment in the United States.
5. Discuss strategies that psychiatrists can utilize in maintaining emotional well-being while caring for women and girls affected by these human tragedies.

How to Earn Credit 

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may do so after completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the completion date and hours earned.
