Description
Psychiatrists frequently encounter patients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. Yet despite the growing evidence base for medications for addiction treatment (MAT), these therapies remain underutilized in general psychiatry. This case-based presentation is designed to enhance familiarity with first-line MATs for opioid, alcohol, stimulant, and cannabis use disorders and equip learners with practical communication strategies for engaging patients—especially those with psychiatric comorbidities—in these treatments. Using real-world clinical vignettes, the course explores MAT selection, strategies for shared decision-making, and methods to improve patient engagement and adherence. Attendees will leave with concrete tools for integrating addiction pharmacotherapy into general psychiatric care, advancing both practice-based competence and patient outcomes
