Bipolar Disorder affects men and women equally and approximately 2.8% of the U.S. population has Bipolar Disorder. Persons with African ancestry have been shown to experience Bipolar Disorder at the same rate as those with European ancestry but are more likely to be misdiagnosed and not treated with lithium with as gold standard treatment. In addition, most genetic studies examining Bipolar Disorder are exclusively based on those with European ancestry. During this webinar we will take a look at the research examining these disparities and explore avenues to improve mental health outcomes of persons with Bipolar Disorder in the Black community.
