Description 

This enduring educational activity explores the concept of emerging adulthood from a psychodynamic lens. Originally introduced by Jeffrey Arnett in 2000, this developmental phase—spanning roughly from ages 18 to 30—is analyzed here in two stages: early emerging adulthood/late adolescence and late emerging adulthood. The session provides psychodynamic insights into identity formation, individuation, and the role of youth culture, while helping mental health professionals distinguish between normative instability and deeper psychopathology. It offers a clinically informed view of how to better treat and understand this transitional developmental stage.

  1. Explain the concept of emerging adulthood, its origins and its evolution, in addition to its controversies and detractors.
  2. Identify the special developmental challenges for young people between the end of compulsory education and age thirty (18–30) in contemporary society.
  3. Appreciate the special considerations and techniques required to work with these young people.
  4. Distinguish between normative developmental struggles and more severe character pathology.

How to Earn Credit 

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may do so after completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the completion date and hours earned. 

Continuing Education Credit  

In support of improving patient care, the American Psychiatric Association is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
