Historically associated with schizophrenia, catatonia is a clinical syndrome occurring in patients with psychiatric illnesses, as well as those with neurologic diseases and other conditions. This neuropsychiatric syndrome has become more commonly recognized clinically in recent years. This interactive module will outline the historical background, neurobiology, screening (including the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale), and treatment associated with catatonia.

  • Define catatonia and the most common signs in patients with catatonia
  • Use the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale to complete a standard examination of catatonia in patients
  • Create a differential diagnosis of catatonia
  • Utilize the common management strategies for catatonia
