Description
As psychiatrists and mental health providers, we frequently take care of people with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities including people who may be unable or less likely to get screenings or evidence-based care due to systemic barriers, stigmatization, psychiatric symptoms, and/or mistrust of the medical system. We often prescribe medications that increase risk of metabolic disorders, and we regularly work with people who have histories of adverse childhood experiences, which are correlated with increased risks for cancer and strokes. With the information that is already available to us from our chart histories and rapport with our patients, we are uniquely positioned to be educators and advocates to help our patients be aware of their treatment options and make their own informed decisions. It can be daunting to keep up with the latest guidelines. In this high-yield, practical review, we will cover lab monitoring, smoking cessation, management of antipsychotic-induced weight gain, and ways to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is a leading cause of death for adults in the US including for people with psychiatric disorders. We will also talk about preventative care topics, such as infectious disease screenings, pregnancy prevention, drug use safety, routine vaccinations, gun safety, and cancer screenings. Throughout the session, you will have an opportunity to consolidate your knowledge using interactive questions and small group case discussions. This session will be led by a dual-boarded Psychiatrist and Family Medicine Physician to highlight key clinical pearls that you can directly implement in your inpatient or outpatient mental health practice to improve care for your patients and help them live longer, healthier lives.
