Can anxiety and worry be perpetuated like a habit? Anxiety levels are increasing individually and collectively in modern society. Faced with uncertainty, an overabundance of information (and misinformation), among other challenges, our minds often default to old survival mechanisms. This can foster unhealthy coping habits (e.g., stress eating), which paradoxically reinforce anxiety itself. Drawing on his clinical work, neuroscience research studies, and the development of next-generation digital therapeutics for habit change, Dr. Brewer will present the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms explaining how anxiety and other habits form. He will then explore how we can leverage these very processes to uproot them, both in clinical treatment and in our own lives.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how anxiety can function as a habit and perpetuate maladaptive coping behaviors.
- Analyze the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms linking anxiety to habit formation.
- Apply neuroscience-informed strategies and digital therapeutics in treating patients with anxiety.
