Description 

Firearms have become the leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults in the United States. This educational session calls upon psychiatrists to embrace a public health perspective in addressing adolescent gun violence, integrating concepts from neurodevelopment, psychiatry, and social determinants of health within a trauma-informed framework. Participants will explore historical shifts in the conceptualization of juvenile crime, the impact of community trauma, and multi-level preventive strategies. Psychiatrists will be encouraged to challenge misconceptions linking mental illness to gun violence and take an active role in advocacy and policy development to protect youth and communities.

1. Identify historical paradigm shifts in views of juvenile crime and gun violence.

2. Explain how adolescent neurodevelopment is sensitive to both risk-taking behaviors and traumatic stress.

4. Describe primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary-level targets in addressing gun violence in adolescent populations.

How to Earn Credit 

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ may do so after completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the completion date and hours earned.
