Pdf Summary
The article discusses the importance of educating psychiatry residents about quality improvement (QI) and the lack of QI education in the field of psychiatry. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires residents to participate in QI activities and the ability to perform QI activities will soon be linked to certification, licensure, and reimbursement. However, there is a shortage of faculty educated in QI and few residency programs have implemented QI curricula.

The article describes a didactic and experiential QI curriculum that was developed for psychiatry residents at a US residency program. The curriculum consisted of 10 seminars and a QI project rotation. The knowledge and skills of the residents were evaluated using the Quality Improvement Knowledge Application Tool (QIKAT) and their satisfaction with the curriculum was assessed through qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

The results showed that the curriculum significantly improved QI knowledge in the residents and all resident QI projects were implemented. The residents and faculty reported satisfaction with the curriculum.

The article concludes that a didactic and experiential QI curriculum can improve QI knowledge and lead to implemented QI projects in psychiatry residents. The success of the curriculum may be attributed to factors such as faculty development and a longitudinal curriculum with protected resident time. Future studies should include control groups and examine interprofessional QI curricula.
