Video Summary
The American Psychiatric Association's webinar on "Digital Psychiatry and Mental Health Applications" explored challenges and opportunities in leveraging digital tools for mental health care with a focus on privacy, equity, and access. Dr. Teresa Mishkeman-Rivera introduced experts Dr. Darlene King and Dr. John Torres, who highlighted the rapid growth of mental health apps, telehealth, wearables, and AI-driven chatbots and their potential to improve personalized care.

However, concerns were emphasized around privacy—most apps share sensitive data with third parties, often without clear user consent—and equity, as digital literacy remains the biggest barrier to access, especially in low-income and marginalized communities. Dr. Torres discussed his "DOORS" digital literacy training to help individuals navigate technology skills, while Dr. King outlined the APA’s App Evaluation Model, a hierarchical framework helping clinicians and patients assess app purpose, privacy, usability, evidence base, and clinical integration without rating or ranking apps.

Both experts cautioned on the limited regulation of many wellness apps outside FDA approval and underscored the ethical need for transparency, rigorous evidence, and preserving patient confidentiality. They raised concerns about the potential for AI tools to exacerbate stigma, fragment care, and replace rather than supplement professional treatment, particularly in substance use disorders.

Clinicians were encouraged to educate themselves on digital tools, actively discuss app and AI use with patients, and contribute real-world experiences to APA efforts advocating for stronger privacy standards and equitable digital health implementation. The panel concluded that embracing AI and digital psychiatry thoughtfully offers a valuable opportunity to raise standards, enhance access, and protect vulnerable populations in mental health care.
