This presentation will have three parts. First, we will review the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of fentanyl and chemically related short-acting opioids, the approved medical uses of these agents, and their clinical pharmacology (e.g. abuse potential, tolerance/cross-tolerance, dependence). Second, we will review trends in fentanyl and congener abuse (e.g. community availability, polydrug exposure), and recent available epidemiological data concerning overdoses and deaths from these agents. Third, we will discuss practice-relevant issues including surveillance/detection (e.g. clinic-level surveys, patient-level urine drug testing, prescription drug monitoring program database checks, interview-based evaluation of risk factors), and treatment options including distribution/use of antagonists (e.g. naloxone) for overdose reversal, client education, and medication-assisted treatment.

How to Earn Credit
Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ or a certificate of participation may do so by completing all sections of the course including the evaluation. A multiple choice quiz is provided based on the content. A passing score of 70% must be achieved. Retakes are available for the test. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (non-physicians) showing the event date and hours earned.
